Penalty taking after Noble
So who do you reckon to take over?

Dec and Antonio have both missed a couple over the last 2 seasons.

Cresswell and Dawson both put excellent ones away against City in the Cup as did Lanzini against Chelsea. Maybe Scamacca?

Cresswell for me.

Player should get fined if they can’t put a ball in the corners. 100 bags a week and can’t do that? It’s like saying they can’t make a 20 yard pass accurately.

Not sure why benrahma. He got presented with a sitter from 4 yards and only just reached the keeper

Good question and a hard one to be sure about.
But if you take into consideration the quality of passes and shots we see during matches i would consider
Scamacca, Cresswell, Kehrer, Benrahma

Agreed ted but one of his best was against Liverpool in the 1981 League Cup Final in which just calmly rolled it in to the bottom left corner sending Clemence the wrong way. Pressure!

It wasn’t a bad penalty, but it was telegraphed in his run up and body shape.

Re: Penalty taking after Noble
Can anyone recall us ever getting a penalty before at Anfield?

Opposition penalties are a rarity there anyway but l think Manchester City have had two in recent years and if l remember rightly both those were missed too

Re: Penalty taking after Noble
On reflection l think l was tad harsh on Bowen but he normally hits them hard and high as did Joolian. He must have been under immense pressure our first penalty at Anfield in front of the Kop in er.........centuries!

Re: Penalty taking after Noble
Noble was great because he was so good at deception.

If you've not got that talent, you have to aim for the top of the stanchion (or the corresponding spot for goals without stanchions) with a lot of force. Get that right, and it's difficult for the keeper to save, even if he's known for a week which side you're going to put it, if you get a penalty

I'm more annoyed that wanky Kop will think they played some sort of role in him missing.....

Re: Penalty taking after Noble
Anyone can miss a penalty, even the best of penalty takers
It's all very well being the best penalty taker on the training ground but it's completely different when it comes to taking one in a big match with all the pressure and atmosphere
It takes a certain type of person to stay cool under pressure
I think Lanzini is easily our best penalty taker currently but he's not on the pitch so often at present
I can imagine that Kehrer would take a pretty good penalty because he's German and they rarely miss penalties do they?

Re: Penalty taking after Noble
I honestly think people over-react to a missed penatly like the one on Wednesday.

The only thing wrong with Bowens penalty is the keeper saved it. Kepper goes the other way we'll be saying what a great penalty it was.

And it's not just about trying to disguise - the keeper and the striker generally know where they are going before the ball has been struck it's just luck.

Bowen going that way on 5 previous penalties, to say he should have changed is just rubbish. If he changes and keeper predicts the change and saves it, everyone will say he should have stuck with the left hand side.

As per usual we are all experts in hindsight.

Re: Penalty taking after Noble
Pen last night was just one of those 'nice height to save' ones if the keeper goes the right way.
The one Bowen scored against Steau was the classic succesful one ..... in the top third of the goal about a foot in from the post & hit HARD
If you are standing in the centre of the goal there is no way you can dive across and UP to get that.
Vary it from side to side and dont get too close to the post ... you dont need to.
Its a bit like the pen Maguire hit in the Euros final .... prob the only decent think he has done in the last season & a half

Re: Penalty taking after Noble
Because I think it's genuinely less about that now, and more about disguise. I'd be willing to bet many of those players would miss lots more in today's game because the keeper is better informed and more agile. You can bet your bottom dollar Alisson was told where Bowen had placed his last five penalties or at least had had a look at them to analyse for anything. In the 80s and 90s, keepers just didn't have that. It's really a game of cat and mouse now. The penalty taker has far, far less of an advantage than they used to because all their previous penalties are on film and on file with the opposition. You have to be unpredictable. No tells.

Blasting down the middle just wouldn't work the same these days unless the oppo has literally no footage on you taking them.

Re: Penalty taking after Noble
Scamacca all day long. Its his fucking job to put the ball in he fucking square thing so just give him the fucking ball. Why the fuck Bowen was taking it I don't know, his shooting has improved but he misses a lot of chances. Obviously fucking Scamacca, the geezer is cultured as fuck, he'd either stroke it in or beak the fucking net. Moyes you useless cunt, give the pens to your fucking striker you hopeless bag of offal.
